I really love your introduction and breakdown of what Orientalism is and where the term came from. Along with this, I think that for the Orientalism concept, a vital part in making it used more infrequently and potentially never again is the idea of fully understanding where and what Orientalism is and how it drastically skews the western world’s perspective of this unique region in such a negative manner. Therefore I really like the way you are looking at the topic at hand and expanding your knowledge, rather than just attempting to find a solution with what we had previously learned in the course.
One crucial thing you could explore in your final report which I don’t think you mentioned, is how Orientalism has changed over time to suit a changing audience. An example of this, that jumps to mind first is the portal of the Ottoman Empire during the First World War and the Chinese during the Vietnam and Korean War through propaganda artwork.
As the world changes so does Orientalism and as a result, the ways these countries are portrayed changes as well. Due to this, we need to understand what modern Orientalism looks like in the hopes of spreading awareness of its current form in hopes of help preventing it from continuing in the future.
But overall, I look forward to reading, your final report and your short presentation that goes along with it. I hope that my suggestion was informative and you are able to take the idea on board and consider including it in the final report!
